However, Sentient -- the AI fox that has been her guardian and only friend since she was born -- doesn't seem too enthusiastic about the possibility of discovering other human beings hiding in the colony. Why is that?

The story of Carbon, Sentient, and Scars kept us eager to keep reading. My 9 year old loved the character, Sentient, and imagined him as an adorable, brave, and kind creature. We couldn't wait to find out the mystery of what happened on GAEA32 and were very pleased when we did.—Goodreads

The author manages to convey in just a few pages the sense of sadness of an abandoned child who wants to find other humans, yet imbues her with empathy for everything around her, and a sense of heroism to save those she loves most.
